The following are the process that you’ll have to follow to file a complaint against an Insurance Company-
File the Complaint with the Insurance Company
The very first step whenever we will file a complaint is to initiate the complaint process with the insurance company itself.
Various authorities within the company help the customers with grievance resolution. Every insurance company has a Grievance Redressal Officer (GRO) that looks at the case and tries to resolve the case.
In case, still you are not satisfied with the redressal of the complaint then you can escalate the matter with external authorities.
File the Complaint with the IRDAI
IRDAI stands for Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India which is a statutory body formed by an act of parliament. The main aim of the regulatory body is to supervise and regulate the insurance sector in India.
One of the functions of the IRDAI is to provide relief to individuals in case of any grievance. You can file a complaint with the IRDAI both online and offline.
Online Complaint with the IRDAI
In the online method, you’ll have to use the Integrated Grievance Management System (IGMS) to file the complaint. The following are the steps that you can follow to file a complaint with the IRDAI-
- Visit the official website of the IRDA IGMS portal and click on the registration button
- After clicking on the registration button, you’ll have to enter your name, address, PAN number, and Aadhaar card details into the form and click on the submit button
- After filling out the form, the registration will be successful and you’ll be able to login to your account using the login credentials
- After logging in, another form will appear with a variety of fields and you’ll have to fill them in one by one. The brief description of the form is as follows-
- Grievance related to Life Insurance or Non-Life InsuranceComplaint against
- Policy type, number, complaint type, and other reference numbers (if any)
- Now, you’ll have to provide additional information along with the policy and a detailed description of the complaint
- After completing the complaint form, click on the submit button
- After clicking on the submit button, your complaint will be registered and one copy of your complaint will be sent to the IRDAI and one to the insurance company
- You can use the same portal to track your complaint status or even escalate the matter if not resolved using the same portal
- The escalation can be easily done by clicking on the Escalate button after the completion of the first redressal process
Offline Complaint with the IRDAI
You can also write a letter to the IRDAI authority to file your complaint offline or simply visit the IRDAI office as well.

File the Complaint with the Insurance Ombudsman
You can also file your complaint with the Council of Insurance Ombudsman which is a separate organization formed under the Insurance Ombudsman Act, 2017.
Insurance Ombudsman will mediate between you can the insurance company or its intermediatory and resolve your issue. You can file the complaint with the Insurance ombudsman both online and offline.
Several insurance ombudsmen can resolve your issue easily in the most cost-effective manner and provide your quick relief.
